We continue to write about Georgian wedding traditions and this time tell you about the traditions in which the marriage was terminated according to the interests of the parents. After mediation, the couple was engaged, but the process and stages were long before the wedding.

First and foremost, the parents of the bride payed to the parent of the groom so that there was a guarantee that if the woman would come back to her parents they would owe nothing to the husband’s parents. Relatives sent the bride-to-be gifts like money, thread and needle. Few days before the wedding the groom’s family would send 2 sheep and 2 buckets of vodka and this should have been used in the wedding.

In case of the groom’s family not accomplishing any of the obligations father of the bride could reject. Poor families were helped by their relatives.

On the wedding day, the groom dressed in the traditional clothes and with sword would enter the brides family, get blessed and then head to the church. The door of the church would be closed until they would make a deal with the priest. After the church ceremony the groom would get the dowry. The newlywed pair would go to the house with the cartload and the guests with the horses.  They would feed the pair with honey. Before the wedding table was ready the bride was taken to the room where they were having some fun.
